It’s a question that is getting a lot of rumor right now, what will the 2010 version of the Xbox 360 look like next year. I was reading today a couple of reports giving out mixed signals and both of the sources for the mixed signals came from the home base of Microsoft themselves. First there was word that the CEO of Microsoft Steve Ballmer was at the Executive Club of Chicago when he casually mentioned that there will be a new version of the 360 sometime in 2010.
That sounds great doesn’t it but hold on a second not more than a day later we get word from Aaron Greenberg who is another top muckity muck over at Microsoft only he is the director of product management for the Xbox and Xbox Live. He stated that there will not be a new Xbox coming in 2010 and that he thinks that Steve Ballmer was simply referring to the very popular project Natal coming out in 2010. He also went on to state that they are only about half way into the life cycle of the 360 and to not expect a new console anytime soon.
Naturally all this he said this and he meant that talk is just stirring the pot of rumors about the next Xbox coming much sooner than later. Honestly though I think I will side with Aaron Greenberg on this issue and agree with his statement about the 360 only being about half way in the life span the Microsoft hopes to get out of this console.
Project Natal is nice and all but that will most likely be an add on piece of hardware with a firmware update. Kind of like the Eye toy over at that other console. I don’t think there has been a big enough jump in technology yet to warrant any present day console being redone other that the Wii and that’s just because Nintendo simply repackaged their Game Cube console.
So when it comes to the Xbox 360 in the year 2010 I think it will be pretty much the same as it is this year. We just may get a few more bells and whistles to plug into it. So what’s your take on all this rumor talk of a new Xbox 360 coming next year or of the next Xbox coming much sooner than later?
